theillustriousmissjo replied to your post: Um, you realise Bill Mudron also directly traced…

When I posted about Mudron on my blog, most people commented that they didn’t know they were traces, just that they were in Mucha’s style. They recognised the style, but not the illustrations themselves. So it’s the same as with Tarusov.

Iiiiiiinteresting!  I’m definitely showing my own personal biases then, whoops.  As Bill put it himself, “I understand why Jo is so pissed off.”  My last bastion of defense would be saying that Bill credits Mucha in the title of each of his pieces, so that soothes my inner copyright tiger?  But again- grey area.  Very, very grey area.

In the long run, my favourite type of homage is *points up* the stuff that breaks down a well-known artist, figures out their stylistic queues and quirks, and mimics them faithfully.  The new illustrator is still providing the bones & foundation of the piece-understanding of anatomy, composition, design, colour, light, that sort of business- but they’re then able to filter it through the style of a given artist.  I love that kind of stuff.
